I live half an hour outside of Seattle, a place notorious for gloomy, rainy weather. So, of course, I require some durable and high quality technical gear. I needed a jacket that would keep me cool in the midst of heavy exercise while protecting me from the cold and often moist weather. So far I’m impressed with my Brooks jacket.
It’s breathable, with a loose fit that allows for a lot of freedom of movement. The fabric is silky and thin, so I’m able to wear it with nothing but a sports bra and I don’t have to worry about the fabric chaffing like cheap sand paper or sticking like saran wrap while I’m sweaty. While I’m running, the reflector-tape yellow keeps me safely visible; while I’m kayaking the jacket repels light ocean spray; while I’m biking it cuts the wind and the low back keeps me covered; and while I’m horseback riding it releases just enough body heat to keep me cool. Not to mention, the curve flattering fit assures I look good doing all of those things. The zip-up pockets are handy for making sure my car key doesn’t get lost. The headphone cord keeper and iPod pocket both make listening to music on the move convenient as well.
The sizing is fairly true, maybe a little on the bigger side, but the overall length and the sleeve length are perfect. However, I have a wide set of shoulders and the limited amount of stretch in the fabric sometimes restricts my shoulder movement. Also, it is no substitute for a rain jacket during a heavy rain. It has no hood, and although the fabric is moderately waterproof, it doesn’t stand up for too long under unrelenting drizzles. Even if you do take this jacket out in the middle of a rain storm, don’t worry. It dries quickly.
